Summary of case
On August 8, 2016, two journalists were among at least 73 people killed and over a hundred injured in a bomb blast in Quetta in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province.
After the murder of Balochistan Bar Association (BBA) President Bilal Anwar Kasi, a large number of lawyers gathered outside the emergency ward of the Provincial Sandeman Hospital, known as Civil Hospital, where Kasi’s body had been brought. A suicide bomber struck the crowd of lawyers and media persons.
Two cameramen — Mehmood Khan of Dawn News and Shahzad Khan of Aaj TV — lost their lives while Dunya News reporter Faridullah and 92 News cameraman Muhammad Fateh were injured.
Shahzad died on the spot while Mehmood was critically injured and later succumbed to the injuries. According to Dawn, Mehmood was shifted to the CMH Quetta in critical condition where he passed away.
The explosion had been confirmed as a suicide bombing. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack.
