On January 4, 2009, Dr Tahir Awan of local daily Apna Akhbar was among seven people killed in a suicide attack in front of the Government Polytechnic College in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Dera Ismail Khan district. The attack took place near an imambargah and also claimed the life of another journalist — Mohammad Imran of local daily Eitedal According to Dawn, the attack was followed by a low-intensity explosion.
