Incident Description: Run over during a political rally

Summary of Case

On October 30, 2022, Channel 5 reporter Sadaf Naeem was killed after she was run over by a container carrying former prime minister Imran Khan while covering his political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s long march near Sadhoke in the Punjab province. As per Channel 5, Naeem fell from the container and was crushed by the container. Following the death of the woman reporter, the Punjab government formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the incident, with Sports Secretary Ehsan Bhutta as the head of the committee.

As per media reports, Naeem’s husband had told police he did not want to take legal action.

Updates

On November 10, 2022, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced compensation of five million rupees for the families of those killed in the Long March, including Naeem. Lahore Press Club President Azam Chaudhry told PPF that the government provided compensation on January 4, 2023.
