Summary of Case

On October 7, 2012, a reporter for Dharti TV, Mushtaq Khand, was killed when gunmen opened fire on a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) public meeting in Khairpur in the Sindh province. Six PPP activists were also killed, while others were injured. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), other journalists were injured and one was critically wounded in the attack. According to Dawn, Sukkur DIG Ameer Shaikh said that the incident occurred because of an enmity between two groups of the Janiwiri community and "police knew who had carried out the attack".

However, they quoted sources as saying that the incident was related to a controversial local government law that was to be raised in the meeting.

The main accused in the case, Azizullah Janwiri, was killed in a police encounter. Two others accused are in police custody. According to the police, the case is in the Anti-Terrorism Court.
