Incident Description: Shot Dead
Summary of Case
On February 27, 2013, a correspondent for The News, Urdu language-daily Jang and Geo News as their North Waziristan correspondent, Malik Mumtaz Khan was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. According to The News, Mumtaz’s family said he came under attack when he was returning home to Miranshah village from a nearby village where he had gone to offer condolences for the death of a local.
The report cited eyewitnesses as saying they had seen “armed men arriving in a white car with tinted glasses, stopping Mallik Mumtaz’s car near the Chashma Pul bridge and opening fire at him.” As per a family member, he was struck on the chest and was taken to the Agency Headquarters Hospital, Miranshah where he passed away. Alternatively, tribesmen said he had been shot on the head and face with an AK-47.
According to an IFEX and CPJ report, Mumtaz had received threats for his reporting in the past. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had denied responsibility and no group had taken responsibility for it.

Mumtaz's nephew, Habibullah, informed PPF that there is no court system in the tribal areas nor is there a proper system of police stations. He said that the case has not been investigated and it has not been determined who was behind Mumtaz's murder.
