Summary of Case

On October 3, 2003, a reporter for a Sindhi-language newspaper Daily Kawish and for Kawish Television News, Ameer Bux Brohi, was shot dead in Shikarpur in the Sindh province. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Shikarpur police chief had said that two unidentified gunmen shot Brohi in front of a local police station and fled. The report quoted witnesses as saying that he was quarrelling with the gunmen.

According to PPF, Brohi was rushed to Shikarpur District Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. As per CPJ, local journalists believed Brohi’s murder was due to his reporting on sensitive local issues that may have upset “feudal strongmen”.

In spite of Brohi’s case reaching trial in an Anti-Terrorism Court in Jacobabad city, the family pardoned the accused in 2015 in return for monetary compensation. Brohi's friend, Abdul Razzak Brohi, said that the accused had sworn he was not involved in the murder after which the slain journalist's father had closed the case.
