Summary of Case
On November 3, 2008, a reporter with Royal TV, Abdul Razzak Johra, was murdered in Mianwali district in Pakistan’s Punjab province. Local drug dealers are believed to be responsible for his murder. Royal TV said that Johra had prepared several reports on drug related crime and he was believed to have received threats for some time. One suspect was reportedly arrested a few days later on November 11.

In 2009, the Session Judge Mianwali sentenced Munir Hussain to death while declaring that Riaz Ahmed was not involved in the crime. The family of the slain journalist challenged the verdict of the lower court in the Lahore High Court. On October 7, 2013, the court sentenced Hussain to life imprisonment and acquitted Ahmed.
